The Port of Pivdennyi (Yuzhny) is the deepest port of Ukraine’s active hub (Odesa, Chornomorsk, Pivdennyi) and the only one that takes capesize vessels. The draught at the berths reaches 19 m, the profile is weighted toward bulk and chemical cargo, and the TIS container terminal is the deepest in the country. Below: what a cargo owner should know about the port’s berths, depths and cargo flows, and which operations we handle in Pivdennyi.

Berths, depths and the ships the Port of Pivdennyi handles
Pivdennyi’s main advantage is depth. A draught at the berths of up to 19 m lets it take large capesize bulkers for grain, ore and coal that the other hub ports cannot accept fully laden. That makes Pivdennyi the point for big ship lots: one shipment instead of several small voyages lowers the rate per tonne.
For a deep-water lot the berth and the laycan window are best booked in advance — it is a matter of the specific date, and it is easier to settle through a ship agent who monitors the situation in the port. Containers here run through the deep-water TIS terminal; for rolling and ferry cargo it is better to look toward Chornomorsk, and for universal transhipment toward Odesa.
What cargo moves through Pivdennyi
The port’s profile is deep-water transhipment of bulk and chemical cargo plus containers at TIS. Four main flows:
Grain and oilseeds
Large ship lots for capesize.
Grain and oilseeds
Deep-water shipment of large lots with phytosanitary control and a survey.
Chemicals and fertilizers
Specialised terminals.
Chemicals and fertilizers
Transhipment of chemical cargo and fertilizers with special safety and storage rules.
Ore and coal
Bulk at deep draught.
Containers (TIS)
Deep-water container terminal.
Containers (TIS)
Bill of lading and declaration handling, feeder and ocean services through the deep-water terminal.
Each flow has its own documentary and operational specifics: grain needs phytosanitary control and a survey, chemicals need special safety rules, a container needs a correct bill of lading and customs declaration. We close this part through customs clearance and cargo insurance.
The TIS container terminal in Pivdennyi is the deepest in Ukraine; in 2026 the world’s largest container operator, MSC, took control of 51% of the terminal. Details are in our review of the MSC deal for the TIS terminal.
Services at the Port of Pivdennyi
We handle vessel calls and cargo in Pivdennyi end to end — from the ship’s arrival to release of the cargo from the terminal. How the cargo transshipment at Pivdennyi port itself works — dry bulk, liquid and container — is covered separately. It is the hub’s base port for deep-water bulk, chemical and container lots; for universal cargo the neighbouring Odesa works alongside it, and for rolling and ferry cargo — Chornomorsk.
