Japan May Begin Providing Assistance to Damaged Ukrainian Ports This Summer
Japanese partners are preparing to provide practical support to several Ukrainian ports affected by Russian attacks, with the first deliveries of assistance expected as early as this summer.
The announcement was made by the president of the Ukrport Association, Dmytro Barinov, during the III international conference NewPORT UA held in Odesa.
According to him, Japanese representatives expressed interest in supporting Ukrainian port infrastructure during a meeting of the security committee attended by more than 93 participants.
Barinov noted that the association had already collected requests from its members and forwarded the identified needs to Japanese partners. The initiative is now moving into a practical implementation phase.
“Some ports require construction machinery and equipment for recovery works. This primarily concerns facilities that suffered damage due to Russian attacks, including ports such as Orlivka Port, Reni Port, and Chornomorsk Port,” he explained.
The assistance package is currently being finalized, and the first stage of support could begin during the summer months.
The NewPORT UA conference brought together representatives of the maritime and logistics sectors to discuss reducing risks in maritime transportation, restoring damaged port infrastructure, maintaining cargo flows, and strengthening cooperation with international partners.
Earlier, local authorities also reported that an explosive device detonated at one of the ports in the Odesa region, once again highlighting the ongoing security risks facing Ukraine’s maritime infrastructure.
