Sunflower field at sunset — Ukrainian sunflower oil exports, with Spain the top buyer in 2025/26

Spain has overtaken India to become the top buyer of Ukrainian sunflower oil in the 2025/26 season. Over July–May, Ukrainian sunflower oil exports to Spain reached 578,500 tonnes — 14.5% of the total — according to the Ministry of Economy’s monthly agri-trade AgroDigest. Almost every tonne sails out through the Greater Odesa hub, so the move in destinations changes the voyage legs and paperwork forwarders book.

  • 51%of exports went to the EU

How Spain pulled ahead in April–May

At the end of March, India still led with 484,400 tonnes (15.3%), and Spain sat second on 445,700 tonnes (14.1%). The order flipped in the final two months of the count: over April–May Spain took an extra 132,800 tonnes against India’s 87,100 tonnes. Heavier late-season Spanish buying was enough to move it into first place by a thin margin.

The full July–May ranking of Ukraine’s largest sunflower oil markets:

  1. Spain — 578,500 t (14.5%)
  2. India — 571,500 t (14.3%)
  3. Netherlands — 460,200 t
  4. Italy — 407,900 t
  5. France — 233,000 t

More EU demand, shorter Black Sea legs

EU countries took 51% of Ukrainian sunflower oil exports over the eleven months — 2.04 million tonnes — against 37.6% (1.5 Mt) for Asia and 7.8% (312,000 t) for Africa. A tilt toward Spain, the Netherlands, Italy and France means more Mediterranean and Atlantic discharge and fewer long Suez–Indian Ocean runs, which can shorten round-trip time and free up vessel slots faster.

Sunflower oil moves two ways out of Odesa, Chornomorsk and Pivdennyi: deep-sea vegoil tankers for large bulk parcels, and flexitanks inside 20ft boxes for smaller lots. The split decides which booking desk you need — bulk tank tonnage, or container shipping on a liner schedule. Either way the cargo still needs freight forwarding, terminal transshipment and cargo insurance arranged at the port.

Shipping smaller oil lots to EU buyers? Flexitanks ride container schedules and book like any box — but need food-grade liners and a clean tank certificate, so line up the documents before the slot, not after.
